What is balance?

Balance is the ability to maintain and control the body's position during everyday activities and sports. It involves both staying still and moving.

Why are balance and coordination important for our children?

These skills help children carry out everyday tasks smoothly and take part in sports effectively. Children with well-developed balance and coordination are more capable mentally, more active and more skilful. They are also less likely to be injured.

What signs may indicate difficulty with these skills?

* Delays in crawling or walking.

* Frequent falls.

* Stiff, robot-like movements.

* Avoiding physical activities.

* Getting tired quickly during activities.

* Difficulty getting dressed independently.

How can we develop these skills?

* Offer a range of varied opportunities for development.

* Break activities down into smaller tasks and focus on one step at a time.

* Give clear, specific guidance during the activity.

* Strengthen the core muscles to support the body's stability.

Activities to strengthen balance and coordination:

* Provide a variety of uneven or unstable surfaces to walk and jump on.

* Try wheelbarrow walking: walking on the hands while an adult supports the legs.

* Running, jumping and swimming.

* Martial arts.

* Tennis.
